300 Kettlebell Challenge Instructional DVD Set Starring Steve Maxwell, 18 Powerful Exercises + Full 300 Kettlebell Challenge

| Thursday, December 17, 2009

This is a follow along -type exercise program using one kettlebell. The workout develops strength endurance, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, and just about every aspect of conditioning, except for maximum strength. The kettlebell should be relatively light, you can do 12-15 military presses with performed in a strict fashion. But don't worry, by the end of the workout it does not feel that light after all. The instructor tells that the workout is inspired by the movie "300", but it's not related to the exercise program the actors used in preparing for the movie.

The film consists of two parts, one being instructional section where every exercise used in the workout is instructed in detail, and the second part is the actual follow along workout. The instructions are very detailed in the sense that the instructor gives the viewer some good tips on exercise performance, but the exercises are not broken down to parts so that a beginner would learn the moves. But then, this workout is not intended for beginners in the first place.

The workout consists of 18 exercises done back to back fashion, with no rest periods during the workout. Each of the exercises is done for 5 or 10 repetitions total or per side, so that the total number of reps done in the workout is exactly 300. The instructor tells that this is the perfect number of repetitions in a workout, but in my opinion it's the perfect number only from marketing standpoint. The workout would be as good if it consisted of 290 or 310 total reps. I don't think it would ruin the workout if you adjusted the rep ranges slightly to suit your fitness level, if you don't have a suitable weight.

The actual workout is follow along -type workout. In my opinion, this is too challenging workout to be used as a follow along workout fashion. Rather, I think it's better to work out on your own pace rather than to try to keep up with the instructor on the film. Therefore, I found it a bit annoying that in the instruction section the instructor does not mention the target number of reps on many of the exercises. You have to look through the workout to see the rep ranges before you can use the workout yourself.

I think that the workout is suitable for trainers of intermediate level and up. There are some technically demanding exercises, but for the most part the workout is just too hard for beginners.

The production of the film is quite basic, but everything works just fine. My only complaint is that the mat the instructor is standing on squeaks a little as he moves around. This is a little annoying, but still a minor issue. The reason I don't give this film full 5 stars is that the price is a bit high, compared to many other similar films.

Weider SpaceSaver 40-Pound Adjustable Kettle Bell

| Wednesday, December 16, 2009
The Weider® 40-lb Powerbell combines 7 kettlebells in 1 convenient set! The weights quickly adjust from 10-40 lbs, so you can personalize any workout.

I really enjoy the Weider adjustable power bell. Though it's cylandrical (as opposed to a regular kettlebell's more rounded) design can make it a little tougher when it rests on your wrists (because of the corners diggin into you a bit)it is quick and easy to use and can really give a great work out. Especially for your lower back!
The instructional DVD that comes w/ it though is a bit of a joke. The instructor spends more time talking about how great the bell is than in its practical applications and uses. (I obviously already bought it, you don't need to sell it to me again!) I would have enjoyed getting more exercises than just the basics he goes into and that didn't happen. Also, he has the personality of a rock and seems to stumble over his sales pitch constantly. Once again, more work out and less sales would have worked.
Overall, I think it's a great value for the price and I use it constantly...

total fitness - Warren Tripp - Colorado
An excellent product allowing my wife and myself to do kettlebell exercises using a weight appropriate for each of us. The DVD is great also with concise explanations and a short but effective exercise routine. Get wrist guards before using the kettlebells--makes a big difference in comfort while learning techniques.

Good idea, poor implementation - Matthew Arieta - Dallas, TX USA
Kettlebells can be very expensive, so the idea of getting a few for the price of one was appealing. After receiving the product I used it for about three weeks. Aside from being noisy as the plates clank together, it was fine. Then the handle started to get loose. I thought to myself, okay no problem, I'll just tighten it back up. Took off the plates to look at the screws and saw where they must have skimped on the cost of the production. The top is a plastic plate which the handle screws into. The screws are at a nearly impossible angle to tighten. I finally found a way to angle in a bit from a ratchet set, and the screws stripped -- they too are cheap. I returned the product at once. I'll be damned if the handle is going to come off this thing mid-swing, especially after paying 0. Look for Kettlebells USA online and get the real deal. You can still get two or three kettlebells for the price of this one, and they don't take up THAT much room. Nice try Weider, but you gotta make it silent, sturdy, and easy to fix in order for this to be remotely worth it.

Clever design, but pricey and fragile - D. Mccall - Florida
Well I was really excited when I got my Powerbell a couple weeks ago. The kettlebell workouts definitely get the heart rate up and give you a total body workout. Unfortunately, the Weider PowerBell has an odd shape to it compared to normal kettlebells. Making certain moves, like the snatch and the rack, a little difficult. Notice I said 'difficult' and not impossible...it just takes a little tweaking in the technique/form.

But the biggest flaw, is how fragile it is. Considering the types of moves you do with these things, like the mid-air hand switch shown on the included DVD, you would expect them to be pretty tough. Well, just this morning, doing a the mid-air hand switch I missed...and it smashed to the ground right on the handle and broke into about 10 pieces. Luckily, I got it from Walmart, and I got a full refund.

Other than that, I really do like the clever design, I would just recommend to anyone that does purchase it to avoid the mid-air hand switches and flips that you may see in some videos. Stick with the basic moves and it should give you a pretty good workout. JUST DON'T DROP IT!
