300 Spartan Workout Starring Steve Maxwell the Original 300 Workout with over 30 Techniques at 3 Levels of Difficulty + Full 300 Workout Challenge Reviews By Customers

Okay, There is some talk about how this isn't the "300 Workout" used for the movie.... don't care! This is an excellent workout for guys who are tired of the more feminine tendency of most workout videos. This is also a good video for progress from weak to fit. Many of the exercises he uses in the video are exercises I used in the US Army and a couple I know the Salvadorian military uses. Another thing I liked was no music. Ever have a workout video with music you hate and it gets stuck in your head while you are in traffic and soon you find a judge is expecting an explanation for why you assaulted 3 cops? Well with this video, put whatever music on you want and get to work. Lastly, it is so much a go at your own pace with end goal of doing the full advance workout in 45 minutes that almost anyone can benefit from it [except for the ultra fit types, you know who you are]. To give you an idea, Steve Maxwell struggles with his own workout. You don't hear any chatter about "I love it" or "Your butt is going to look so good." Steve just comes off as a grumpy old man who challenges you to do better than a grumpy old man [him] with his workout.

Downside is Steve Maxwell is kind of creepy. You can tell he is a fighter and not a public speaker or entertainer. I have this expectation that he is going to show up at my door and start yelling at me for not keeping my elbows in. On top of that, he seems to have a hard time reading his cue cards or is trying to remember what he had pre written but is a little punch drunk or maybe he is just winging it. So he comes off as listening to Mike Tyson after a fight.
The workout is a little dependent on workout equipment. You have the variable pull-up bar, the half yoga ball, some mats and a yoga block to start off with. He mentions some stuff you can use to replace the equipment but even the door hang pull up bars are not a match for some of this workout. Kind of hate that.

Lastly, bad if you have a set time dedicated to working out and doesn't give a day to day breakdown on rest periods which is needed for this workout so your muscles can rest. You just try to do 30 reps of each exercise until you are done in as short a time as possible. My recommendation to start out with is a 30/10 reps alternate on exercises depending on if it is an upper body or lower body day until 30 feels as natural as breathing. Then do everything as 30 reps. Move up to the next level when that is second nature. Another option is to alternate this video with a different workout video that you like but find easy. I do the Forza workout as the cool down after 300 and do as my rest day workout when I feel like I need to take a break.

In thinking about it, I wonder if there is a Spartan diet plan? Lots of olives and red wine I hope.

Cheers

Spartan 300 Workout - H. Woods -
Funnily enough as I write, I am watching my husband partake in the exercises from this DVD.
He was in search of a fully body workout programme, that was cheap but would challenge him.............it was cheap (considering the cost of a gym membership)is definitely challenging him and he already feel the benefit of a couple of workouts. It looks a relatively easy workout but I can assure you this isn't for the faint hearted! Instead of his proclaimation of being a Gladiator........he says he is now going for Spartan status! Watch this space?

300 Kettlebell Challenge Instructional DVD Set Starring Steve Maxwell, 18 Powerful Exercises + Full 300 Kettlebell Challenge

| Thursday, December 17, 2009

This is a follow along -type exercise program using one kettlebell. The workout develops strength endurance, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, and just about every aspect of conditioning, except for maximum strength. The kettlebell should be relatively light, you can do 12-15 military presses with performed in a strict fashion. But don't worry, by the end of the workout it does not feel that light after all. The instructor tells that the workout is inspired by the movie "300", but it's not related to the exercise program the actors used in preparing for the movie.

The film consists of two parts, one being instructional section where every exercise used in the workout is instructed in detail, and the second part is the actual follow along workout. The instructions are very detailed in the sense that the instructor gives the viewer some good tips on exercise performance, but the exercises are not broken down to parts so that a beginner would learn the moves. But then, this workout is not intended for beginners in the first place.

The workout consists of 18 exercises done back to back fashion, with no rest periods during the workout. Each of the exercises is done for 5 or 10 repetitions total or per side, so that the total number of reps done in the workout is exactly 300. The instructor tells that this is the perfect number of repetitions in a workout, but in my opinion it's the perfect number only from marketing standpoint. The workout would be as good if it consisted of 290 or 310 total reps. I don't think it would ruin the workout if you adjusted the rep ranges slightly to suit your fitness level, if you don't have a suitable weight.

The actual workout is follow along -type workout. In my opinion, this is too challenging workout to be used as a follow along workout fashion. Rather, I think it's better to work out on your own pace rather than to try to keep up with the instructor on the film. Therefore, I found it a bit annoying that in the instruction section the instructor does not mention the target number of reps on many of the exercises. You have to look through the workout to see the rep ranges before you can use the workout yourself.

I think that the workout is suitable for trainers of intermediate level and up. There are some technically demanding exercises, but for the most part the workout is just too hard for beginners.

The production of the film is quite basic, but everything works just fine. My only complaint is that the mat the instructor is standing on squeaks a little as he moves around. This is a little annoying, but still a minor issue. The reason I don't give this film full 5 stars is that the price is a bit high, compared to many other similar films.

Encyclopedia of Joint Mobility Starring Steve Maxwell, 8 Volumes of Instruction on 3 DVD's

World Class Fitness Trainer and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blackbelt Steve Maxwell takes you through an incredible journey of Joint Mobility Drills designed to strengthen, protect and improve your joint health from head to toe through range of motion. Your body will realize its full potential as a well oiled machine by adding these important exercises to your routine. A must have for any athlete looking to gain the upper hand against injuries and body wear and tear.

This is a good and comprehensive guide to mobility. Maxwell makes a point, mainly practically, that mobility is to be preferred to stretching, since dynamic movements including muscle effort, makes for a healthier, less riscy and more functionable form of mobility. The DVD is divided in to three parts and addresses all major (and a lot of minor ones as well) joints and directions of movement. I would say it's greatest strength is that it is excellent for preventing damage to the body. It probably has a lot of curative functions as well, and according to Maxwell himself, who has taken a lot of injuries through his career, it is what keeps him goin and moving. I think the only weak point of this is that it is a bit overwhelming, and can be hard to know exaclty what to use and not. This is mainly due to it's encycopedic nature, and not in it self bad. It's just not completely user friendly. But if you're looking for a comprehensive guide to mobility movements/training this is an excellent alternative, and could probably be used with the same level of efficency by complete beginners and athletes, as you can work your way to the more difficult exercises, little by little, or just focus on your area of priority. It's maybe not innovative to the extreme, but it compensates by being trustworthy, thorough, and as said, very comprehensive. So the only reason it's not getting top character, is that it isn't fantasically userfriendly, and not exeptionally original.
Still recomend it to about everybody, regardless of age, sex or mobilitylevel, as you'll be hard pressed not to find anything usefull in here. I sure did!
